Brand New Models Just In...

The past couple of months has seen us saying goodbye to some of our long standing chairs. It always feels like the end of an era when we finally remove them from our website but times change and everyone has to move on.

Of course there is always a good side and for every chair that we lose we always gain another in its place. We have seen lots of new recruits to our books and there are also more coming very soon!

Lets take a look at some of our new models...

The Storm
The Storm

The Storm

This chair is our latest number and has a deep cushioned seat and back which are upholstered with bonded leather making them easy to keep clean and are very hard wearing. The mechanism on thischair is  triple lever and  makes for easy adjustment of the seat height,, back angle and chair tilt functions. The arms are also height adjustable as is the ratchet back which can be raised and lowered to suit the user. The base is manufactured out of chrome and for a small charge the chair can be ready built for you!

The Torsion
The Torsion

The Torsion

The Torsion chair arrived at the same time as the Storm, it features a high contoured fabric backrest with a built in headrest. The arms are height adjustable and finished off with soft PU pads which give the user extra comfort as well as looking good too. The multi function mechanism has an independent seat / backrest adjustment and the high density seat is filled with moulded foam giving extra comfort to the user. A stylish chrome base completes the chair. As with many of our chairs, you can receive it ready built for a small charge.

The Velocity
The Velocity

The Velocity

The Velocity has been a hit already with one of our major customers, they were particularly praiseworthy of the seat slide adjustment which, when coupled with the synchronised mechanism produce one of the most versatile chairs we sell. The arms are height adjustable with multi directional arm pads and can also be folded away if not required. Add the adjustable lumbar support in to the mix and you have one of the best value chairs on the web! This chair is finished off with a chrome frame and is available ready built.

The Tesla
The Tesla

The Tesla

This chair is a particular favourite of mine, I have always liked mesh back models and this one is just that! The mesh back of this chair has an integral lumbar support which is very important if you're to be seated for long periods , there is also a seat slide and seat tilt control included. This chair features soft pull twist and slide arm pads  and the chrome base in accented with chrome castors.

Next time we will look at four more of our newbies and give our verdicts!

Happy Friday the 13th everybody!!

Here are some fun facts about this unpopular date!

So many people are wary or afraid of this date, but did you know that this "phobia" actually has a name?
It is called friggatriskaidekaphobia.

Good news for the superstitious, Friday the 13th will occur only once in the year 2014, according to sources. Unfortunately, bad luck will reign again in the year 2015, with three Friday the 13th days on the calendar, in February, March and November.

Hotels, skyscrapers and even hospitals have been known to skip out on creating a 13th floor due to its numeral connection to the unlucky day. While not all establishments follow this superstitious trend, some have played into it. The Curtis Hotel in Denver, Colo., however, laughs in the face of fear by playing the "dun, dun, dunnnnn!!" theme in the elevator shaft for guests as they arrive on the 13th floor.

According to a report from U.K.’s The Mirror, 72 percent of United Kingdom residents claimed to having had experiences with bad luck on Friday the 13th. The participants polled admitted to avoiding traveling, attending business meetings and making large purchases on this unlucky day, with 34 percent admitting to wanting to “hide under their duvet" for the upcoming dates.

The “Friday the 13th” film franchise has been frightening moviegoers since its debut in 1980, and yet it continues to sweep up its box-office competition. According to BoxOfficeMojo.com, the dozen films named after the haunted holiday have raked in more than $380 million nationally, with an average gross of $31 million per feature.

Friggatriskaidekaphobia must have been rampant in the year 1984, when, according to USA Today, Friday the 13th occurred three times in one year, each date occuring exactly 13 weeks apart. The unlucky dates were January 13, April 13 and July 13.

The Importance Of Using the Best Chair For the Job.

The average office worker spends a minimum of 7-8 hours every day in a seated position. This has  been the case in most offices of course but the introduction of computer technology, particularly email and the internet, have made us even more sedentary than before.

Remember 20 years ago?

In those days if you needed to send an important message or memo to somebody you would type it out, print it and then (shock horror!!) actually stand up and walk to their office or desk to physically hand them the piece of paper. Nowadays we just type it,  click a button and BOOM the message instantly pops up in front of the recipient.!  No standing up, no exertion from having to put one foot in front of the other and certainly no need to lift a heavy sheet of paper. It is all done from the comfort of your office chair with hardly any physical movement whatsoever.

OK, maybe that example is a bit extreme and dramatic but it does demonstrate that we tend to spend even more time in a seated position than ever before. It’s not that we’re lazy, it’s just that quite often there is absolutely no need to leave our desks (except maybe for a toilet break – but I wouldn’t be surprised if the chair pictured below is introduced at some point).

Due to this increased inactivity it is more important than ever to have the correct chair.  Quality features such as a lumbar support, headrest, height adjustment and adjustable arms are considered essential in todays working environment.  You may not always realise it but when you find yourself sliding down your chair or slouching to one side you are damaging your spine all the time, the most worrying part is that you never realise the damage until it is too late! Your spine is one of the most important parts of your body, if you suffer from back ache you can find yourself completely debilitated, unable to walk, crouch or carry items as many back pain sufferers will tell you!

At this point you have probably straightened yourself up and resumed the required position – but for how long?  As soon as you throw yourself back in to the job at hand you will unintentionally slip back in to your usual bad habits as before.

Thankfully there are chairs available nowadays to help you maintain the best seating position. In our orthopaedic chairs category you will find a generous selection of these models all at very reasonable prices.
Our three most popular models are the Serenity, Halcyon and Chiro Plus. These chairs have adjustable armrests, height adjustment, multiple lever mechanism, seat slide, adjustable back, lumbar support, synchronised mechanism and are all certified to EN5459.

Take a look, your back will thank you!!

More new recruits to our range!!

Another week has passed and we have yet more brand new chairs  to add to our range.  All of these chairs are recent additions to the market and come with all the standards that we expect from any product that we sell to our customers.

The first of these is the Blur Mesh Back.

Blur Mesh Back with optional headrest.

The back of this chair, as the name suggests, is manufactured with a high quality breathable mesh which is particularly useful if you are going to be sitting down for long periods. The back is reinforced with  bars which, as well as adding stability, also enhances the design of the chair. This is due in no small part to the bars being manufactured with chrome which matches the base and gas lift mechanism. The seat itself is upholstered with faux leather and there are height adjustable arms thrown in for good measure.  This chair also has the extra option of a headrest if you require one.

The next newbie to join us is the Berkeley, this chair is available in two models,  the high back swivel chair and a matching high back cantilever version.

The Berkeley Range

Both of these chairs are upholstered with quality faux leather and have polished chrome framework. This attractive polished chrome is also used on the arms which have soft pads for extra comfort.

Our final set this week is the Hero range. There are three in this collection, high back swivel, medium back swivel and a matching cantilever visitor model.

The Hero Collection

These chairs are based on an iconic 20th century design and are like a sister product to our immensely successful Starkins range we introduced a few weeks back.

All of these chairs are available now and are sure to be very successful, they are very reasonable priced and, like most of our chairs on offer , come with the option of being ready built for a charge.

Take a look!!

What makes a good office chair?

This is not as easy as it sounds to answer as there are many variables to take into account such as how long will the chair be used for each day, the size of the user, the size of the room and many other questions.

The quality of the chair is a good place to start.
If the chair is really cheap then there’s a good chance it won’t be good quality and will not last long.
If you’re spending £39 on a ‘leather’ office chair from a large store you get what you pay for.

A decent office chair should have a good amount of padding and it should be good quality padding. Push your fist down on the seat and you should not be able to feel the bolts etc.

The front edge of the seat should have a shaped or ‘waterfall’ front edge. A seat with a straight front will cut off circulation. A good rule of thumb is that you should be able to slide your fingers between the inside of legs and the front edge of the seat.

On a higher quality chair the seat may have an individual tilt function and/or seat slide. These are useful for finding that comfortable seating position.

The back of the chair is also very important. The back should be shaped to compliment the natural posture of your spine and should offer good support.
The back should be adjustable for tilt and ideally should be adjustable for height to accommodate different users.
The shape of the back will promote good posture.

The chair should of course be height adjustable to accommodate different users.

Posture and how you use your chair is another issue. I have covered this briefly in another post here; http://theofficechairshop.blogspot.com/2011/11/posture-chair-whats-that-all-about.html

The width of the chair should be adequate for you. More generous sized chairs are available if you have a larger frame so don’t squeeze into a chair that is too small.

Many better quality chairs have adjustable arms. Height adjustment is common and many have width adjustment and more to help find a good position.

If you are spending long periods in your chair then an executive type chair is not a great chaice as they tend to have very limited adjustability.
You are better off looking at task type chairs with lots of adjustment built in as we have mentioned above.

We have a wide range of office chairs at www.theofficechairshop.co.uk. We welcome the opportunity to talk to our customers so please feel free to call us and discuss any questions you may have.
