Happy Friday the 13th everybody!!

Here are some fun facts about this unpopular date!

So many people are wary or afraid of this date, but did you know that this "phobia" actually has a name?
It is called friggatriskaidekaphobia.

Good news for the superstitious, Friday the 13th will occur only once in the year 2014, according to sources. Unfortunately, bad luck will reign again in the year 2015, with three Friday the 13th days on the calendar, in February, March and November.

Hotels, skyscrapers and even hospitals have been known to skip out on creating a 13th floor due to its numeral connection to the unlucky day. While not all establishments follow this superstitious trend, some have played into it. The Curtis Hotel in Denver, Colo., however, laughs in the face of fear by playing the "dun, dun, dunnnnn!!" theme in the elevator shaft for guests as they arrive on the 13th floor.

According to a report from U.K.’s The Mirror, 72 percent of United Kingdom residents claimed to having had experiences with bad luck on Friday the 13th. The participants polled admitted to avoiding traveling, attending business meetings and making large purchases on this unlucky day, with 34 percent admitting to wanting to “hide under their duvet" for the upcoming dates.

The “Friday the 13th” film franchise has been frightening moviegoers since its debut in 1980, and yet it continues to sweep up its box-office competition. According to BoxOfficeMojo.com, the dozen films named after the haunted holiday have raked in more than $380 million nationally, with an average gross of $31 million per feature.

Friggatriskaidekaphobia must have been rampant in the year 1984, when, according to USA Today, Friday the 13th occurred three times in one year, each date occuring exactly 13 weeks apart. The unlucky dates were January 13, April 13 and July 13.

From us to you – your chairs journey!

We are always out and about meeting new suppliers and manufacturers, we strive to constantly evolve our range with the highest quality products available and choose our business partners very carefully.

Our new Berkeley chair, for example, was added to our range after lengthy negotiations with the managing director of one of the largest office chair manufacturers in the UK.

Once we have agreed to sell the item on our site it is back to Winnington House armed with photographs, spec sheets and various other important data to add to our website.  This  all combines to give you the most data possible to proceed with a confident and informed purchase.
As soon as we have included all relevant information on our latest product the item is now added as live to our website and is available to buy.

The product now remains on our site permanently or until removed (occasionally a manufacturer may ask us to remove a product temporarily if they suffer from supply issues).

When an order arrives for one of our chairs the payment is processed by our accounts dept  who then inform our sales team that a payment has been received and an order needs to be sent out.

Our sales team forward the order on to the relevant manufacturer who then  send the chair out (normally by a third party courier such as City Link or Parcel Force).

The chair is delivered safe and sound to our  customer as soon as possible (different manufacturers have varying lead times for delivery but most of them quote 24-48 hours from point of order).

And that’s it!

We like to try and keep things simple and straight forward. Our sales team also offer an after sales service to deal with any queries or problems that may arise (every once in a while a customer may need advice on how to set up their chair or may wish to order spares such as castors or different arms etc).  A quick email to us, or phone call, is all that is needed and we strive to deal with your request as swiftly and efficiently as possible.

Our office hours are 09:00 - 17:30 Monday to Thursday and 09:00 - 17:00 Friday.

Speak soon!

The Importance Of Using the Best Chair For the Job.

The average office worker spends a minimum of 7-8 hours every day in a seated position. This has  been the case in most offices of course but the introduction of computer technology, particularly email and the internet, have made us even more sedentary than before.

Remember 20 years ago?

In those days if you needed to send an important message or memo to somebody you would type it out, print it and then (shock horror!!) actually stand up and walk to their office or desk to physically hand them the piece of paper. Nowadays we just type it,  click a button and BOOM the message instantly pops up in front of the recipient.!  No standing up, no exertion from having to put one foot in front of the other and certainly no need to lift a heavy sheet of paper. It is all done from the comfort of your office chair with hardly any physical movement whatsoever.

OK, maybe that example is a bit extreme and dramatic but it does demonstrate that we tend to spend even more time in a seated position than ever before. It’s not that we’re lazy, it’s just that quite often there is absolutely no need to leave our desks (except maybe for a toilet break – but I wouldn’t be surprised if the chair pictured below is introduced at some point).

Due to this increased inactivity it is more important than ever to have the correct chair.  Quality features such as a lumbar support, headrest, height adjustment and adjustable arms are considered essential in todays working environment.  You may not always realise it but when you find yourself sliding down your chair or slouching to one side you are damaging your spine all the time, the most worrying part is that you never realise the damage until it is too late! Your spine is one of the most important parts of your body, if you suffer from back ache you can find yourself completely debilitated, unable to walk, crouch or carry items as many back pain sufferers will tell you!

At this point you have probably straightened yourself up and resumed the required position – but for how long?  As soon as you throw yourself back in to the job at hand you will unintentionally slip back in to your usual bad habits as before.

Thankfully there are chairs available nowadays to help you maintain the best seating position. In our orthopaedic chairs category you will find a generous selection of these models all at very reasonable prices.
Our three most popular models are the Serenity, Halcyon and Chiro Plus. These chairs have adjustable armrests, height adjustment, multiple lever mechanism, seat slide, adjustable back, lumbar support, synchronised mechanism and are all certified to EN5459.

Take a look, your back will thank you!!

The new Starkins Eames style office chair range.

Introducing our new Starkins range of office chairs.

Left to right; Starkins Cantilever, Starkins High Back and Starkins Medium
Brand new to The Office Chair Shop is a fabulous new range of chairs which are based on an immensely popular design which first appeared in  the 20th century.

The chairs in question are the Starkins High Back, StarkinsMedium Back and Starkins Cantilever
which all feature chrome framing, soft faux leather upholstery and contoured backs for added comfort.   These stylish chairs are based on the popular range of seating designed by the Eames family of America who produced works from various media between the 1930s and  1970s.

Charles Ormond Eames (1907 – 1978) and Bernice Alexandra “Ray” Eames (1912-1988) were married in 1941 and throughout the 50s 60s and 70s produced lots of major contributions to modern architecture and furniture.

Charles and Bernice "Ray" Eames

The “Eames Aluminium Group” of chairs on which the Starkins is based first appeared in 1958. It was originally manufactured with mesh but this was quickly discontinued and over the years different materials have been used – the most iconic of which is the black leather version .

Original Black Leather Eames Chair

Ironically, although this furniture range is considered an icon of office furniture it was originally commissioned as  an outdoor seating range for the home . This idea quickly vanished however and the chair found its more familiar setting in the office. A place where it has remained for over 50 years!
